Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
– James 1:12
Blessings come in SO many different forms. As we begin this month of Thanksgiving, we will experience many opportunities to give thanks to God and to each other for the many ways we are blessed. Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday since it has not been pre-empted by any cultural appropriations. I pray that as you spend that time reflecting on your blessings, that you will begin to understand how much God loves you and is working for good for those who love God and are called according to His purposes (Romans 8:28).
As we read over our verse for today, we quickly realize that even though blessings come in many forms, sometimes blessings are the result of deliverance. Deliverance has been my word for 2024. As a theological term, it means that you and I are rescued and set free from our circumstances and the punishment from our sin by a loving and holy God who has the power to deliver us. You might think that James 1:12 is focused on the person that is persevering under a trial. If we’re not careful, we might even think that the person has done something powerful or ingenious in order to stand the test and be delivered. Yet, there is nothing we can do to persevere under trial except to fully surrender (my word for 2025) control of every circumstance to God, who is perfect in wisdom and power. It’s not you and I who are able, but God who is able. And THAT, friends, is where and when the blessing comes.
The one thing we can do – the one response – is to the love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. To worship passionately. To love extravagantly. To witness boldly. To make disciples and spread scriptural holiness across the globe, including in every one of our backyards. In every trial and season of our lives, when we love God, repent of our sin, increase our faith, learn lessons, and live lives of holiness as empowered by the Holy Spirit, God will deliver us and pour out blessings like crowns of life promised to us. In this season of gratitude, no matter what the trial or travail, allow God to do the work of blessing you as you surrender your life to Him today and always. Be blessed!
