“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
Summer Devotional Series:
“Faith Hacks”
Week I
Today, we’re starting a new summer series called Faith Hacks. It’s a play on a popular social media trend from a few years ago called life hacks. Life hacks are really simple ways to save time and make life easier, or so it’s thought. Well, maybe there are some Faith Hacks that can help us. The first one is reading your bible.
Let’s dive in…
If someone told you there was a single practice that could transform your walk with Jesus, would you try it? If it only took a few minutes a day and brought clarity, conviction, and confidence to your spiritual life—would you commit?
Reading your Bible isn’t just a spiritual chore or a religious ritual. It’s a faith hack – a divine shortcut, if you will – designed by God to mature you in Christ, strengthen your walk, and equip you to do good in the world.
In 2 Timothy 3:16–17, the Apostle Paul reminds us that Scripture is ‘God-breathed.’ That means every word is infused with the breath of God. It’s the same breath that brought life to dust in Genesis and raised Jesus from the grave. That breath now meets you every time you open the Bible.
Paul had been through persecution, imprisonment, and rejection. And yet he writes to Timothy with confidence: The Scriptures that formed you from childhood? They’re enough. They will train you, correct you, guide you, and build you up for everything God has called you to do.
John Wesley once said, “I want to know one thing, the way to heaven…God himself has condescended to teach the way…He hath written it down in a book. Oh give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God!”
But here’s the truth many don’t want to admit: lots of people feel stuck when they try to read the Bible. It feels confusing, boring, or irrelevant. That’s where a few practical faith hacks can help:
- Pray before you read: Invite the Holy Spirit to teach and illuminate the Scriptures.
- Take notes: Write down insights, questions, and life applications, right in the margin of your bible!
- Mark your Bible: Use symbols or highlights to identify truth, questions, and action steps. You can even identify songs that might come to mind or places where Jesus is mentioned.
- Pray again: Ask God how to live out what you’ve just learned.
This isn’t just about information. It’s about transformation. Every time you open Scripture, God wants to shape you into a practical, mature disciple of Jesus. The kind of person who not only knows the truth, but lives it with joy and purpose.
So today, open your Bible. Breathe in the Word. Start small if you need to. Ask God to show you something real and useful. Because the truth is, the Bible is meant to be lived, not just learned.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your Word. Help me to love it, learn it, and live it. Teach me how to hear Your voice through the pages of Scripture. Grow me into a mature disciple who lives out Your truth in everyday ways. Amen.
Blessings,
Steve
