Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. – 1 Peter 5:8-9
Let me say this clearly at the beginning, “You are not alone!” And even as I write that, there’s a slight doubt in my mind that even I totally believe that at times, especially when suffering and storms come in my life. We often think that the trials and temptations we are experiencing are ours alone. Suffering isolates us. Spiritual attacks make us feel cut off from those around us, the church, and even the Lord, at times. The truth is that’s exactly what Satan and the forces of evil want. This also carries over into our faith communities and is amplified by the number of people involved. As churches face challenges of any kind (or every kind), we tend to focus inwardly and think that we’re the only ones who are struggling and burdened by the pain of conflict, loss, or misunderstanding. Our verse for the day speaks the opposite truth into our lives.
The Apostle Peter, writing to the churches and believers that were scattered around the region in the Ancient Near East, confirms a truth that is SO easy to forget in the midst of our pain: that the devil is like a roaring lion, ready to devour people’s lives, churches, and communities…even whole cultures. In light of that, Peter encourages (commands?) the followers of Jesus to resist the devil. That’s not something we can do in our own strength. We should never even try, honestly. Jesus is clear that prayer and fasting are the only things that cast out the evil in this world, in the name of Jesus (Matthew 17:21). Peter also exhorts us to stand firm in our faith in the power of Jesus and His resurrection. Nothing that you’re experiencing hasn’t been seen before by Jesus. When you lean into Jesus and others, you will realize that you aren’t the only one suffering or being attacked. Each and every follower of Jesus is a target that the devil wants to impact for his evil purposes to thwart the holy plans of a good God.
You are not alone. And it’s TOGETHER that we will encourage and help each other to resist the devil and any evil forces of wickedness that come against the church and its body of believers. You are not alone. Jesus is with you. By faith, He is here and is more powerful than any other power. He is Lord! Will you take a step in love today toward someone who you disagree with or are not seeing with eyes of grace and mercy? Chances are really good that they are suffering or hurting in some way, just like you. And, with one heart focused on Jesus, you can dispel the darkness and bring light to any circumstance, in any church, with any believer.
We are not alone!
