The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way”—
“a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’” Mark 1:1-3
One of the hobbies I have is turkey hunting. I’m not a particularly good or successful turkey hunter, but there’s an alluring thrill in it. The part I don’t like – the part that makes me weary – is the fact that a true turkey hunter needs to get up at 4:00am, and walk silently, in the pitch black, to a place in the woods that will keep a hunter hidden from the turkeys, if you can get them to come to you. Every time I do that, I get a little nervous and it’s tiring and wearisome.
In this world, our daily walk of life can be wearisome and anxious, especially when the world wants to distract us and knock us off the path of discipleship. In a world overwhelmed with busyness and distraction, weariness can settle deep in our souls. Obligations pile up, hope feels distant, and our joy seems dim. Advent reminds us that even in this weary state, joy is possible when we reorient our lives toward Jesus.
Mark 1:1-8 introduces John the Baptist, a voice crying out in the wilderness, pointing people to the Messiah. He calls for repentance and preparation—a re-centering of life toward Christ. Just as John pointed others to Jesus, we, too, must align our lives with Him as our destination. Faith grows when we see beyond the weariness and recognize Jesus as our source of life and hope.
Like a hunter navigating dark woods, our journey can feel uncertain. But when we fix our focus on Jesus, weariness transforms into faith. He is our lighthouse, unchanging and steady, guiding us through storms and darkness.
Advent celebrates Emmanuel—God with us. Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection proclaim the Good News: He is the light of the world, offering everlasting life to those who believe. This Advent, allow the Holy Spirit to fill your weary heart with His joy and peace. Move confidently toward Jesus, the One who turns weariness into rejoicing. We’re getting so close to Christmas! I pray your joy – HIS joy – overflows in your life!
