“As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”
James 2:26

I’m not much for zombie movies. If that takes me down a notch in your book, I’m OK with that. There’s just something unsettling about watching the living dead stumble around, causing chaos. Even though I know zombies are a Hollywood invention (we know that, right?), I still think it’s weird to imagine post-human people—not really living—wandering aimlessly and doing unmentionable, un-dead things.

When I read this passage from James, it reminds me that as followers of Jesus, we are called to be fully alive in Him—not just spiritually filled, but actively engaged in His work. If we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are justified and regenerated by God’s amazing grace. Through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, we are forgiven and freed from the punishment of sin. Yet, as we will soon celebrate on Easter, Jesus didn’t just die—He rose from the grave to defeat death forever. And when He ascended, He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell among us and within us.

That Spirit is what empowers us to live out our faith. It’s what moves us from “undead” belief into vibrant, life-giving action. As Richard Watson, a prominent 19th-century Wesleyan theologian, once said, “The influence of the Holy Spirit is not a thing to be merely felt; it is a power to be manifested in our conduct.” Our faith isn’t meant to exist in isolation; it’s designed to express itself in acts of service and love. If our faith is inactive, it risks resembling the lifeless state James warns against—like spiritual zombies, disconnected from the purpose God has called us to fulfill.

We’re now two weeks into this Lenten season. By now, we’ve had opportunities to reflect on who God is and who we are in Him. This season invites us to deepen our relationship with Jesus, relying on the presence and power of His Spirit within us. That Spirit assures us of our salvation and propels us to serve boldly.

John Wesley was convinced that we could “know that we know that we know” we are saved. But he also warned that faith without outward expression is like walking around as an “undead” believer. There are no zombies in the kingdom of God.

So ask yourself: How are you living out your faith as a true believer? How is the Spirit empowering you to serve with your hands and feet, to speak words of life to those around you? Reflect on what Jesus has done for you, then step out in faith to share His love. There are countless people in your life who are walking around dead in sin, and a word or deed from you—in Jesus’ name—has the power to awaken them to new life in Him.
