Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. – 1 Chronicles 16:8
I don’t know about you, but I’m not yet ready to give up on Thanksgiving for this year. I think the reason for that is because I keep thinking of things for which I am thankful – family, friends, a roof over my head, air to breathe, provision, and so much more. We’ve spent time praising God with heart of gratitude for the small things and the big things for which we are thankful. I know we have entered the season of Advent, and Christmas will be here before we know it. However, Thanksgiving still lingers profoundly in my heart, even as we prepare to allow the Holy Spirit to fill us with anticipation for Christmas, when we celebrate the in-breaking of the Kingdom of God in the form of a child, who is King of Kings!
Maybe, though, the whole point of Thanksgiving is to prepare our hearts to receive even MORE during this coming Advent season. The blessings certainly don’t end, so our gratitude should not either. The author of Chronicles gave a very specific command to the people: “Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name; make known among the nations what He has done.” Maybe the very act of thanksgiving – public and private – is the act of preparing ourselves and the world to receive even more during the weeks to come. Maybe, as we spend time reflecting on what God has done, it gets us ready for what God will do.
As we enter fully in to the season of Advent, I pray that the reverberations of Thanksgiving not only don’t fade, but that they increase and crescendo to a glorious chorus of, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” and, “Joy to the World.” May the praise continue! Forever!
