“For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.
And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”
2 Corinthians 5:14-15

Motivation is a powerful force. As I write this, my favorite football team has yet to be eliminated from the playoffs. And while I’m not disappointed in that, I began this morning by thinking about what compels me to do what I do. Very simply, the things that motivate us are the things that compel us to do this or that. Our desire to win a football game may be the motivation we need to compel us to practice often, play hard, and sacrifice. My desire to buy a car could be the motivation I need to compel me to work a job, save my pennies, and sacrifice some other things on which I’d spend money. You get the idea.

What is it, then, that motivates you to live a Christian life? And, if you have motivation, then what does that compel you to do? In our verse for today, Paul reminded the church in Corinth that it’s Jesus’ love that motivates and compels us to live a life that is holy and freed from the self-rule that we are so tempted to live. The motivation is our faith—that we are convinced that Christ died for us as an ultimate sacrifice of love and that he rose again on the third day as a promise for our future as well. And it’s the motivation of Jesus’ loving sacrifice and new life that compels us to live lives that reflect Christ’s love in the world.

What would it look like if your main motivation was consistently love? Love that would compel you to offer grace. Love that speaks God’s truth. Love that forgives. Love that serves and worships and prays. I think it would look a lot like Jesus!

May the best team win in football. We know, however, that football has very little eternal implication. Jesus has already won the victory, so that everything we do can be motivated by God’s love, and he has eternal and very urgent, real-world impact ready for us. Let that love and your faith in Jesus compel you to be motivated to love and serve those around you in Jesus’ name.
